Are you running a marathon? Completing a triathlon? How about climbing Mt.Fuji?
Calling all marathon runners, triathaloners, swimmers, cyclists, and mountaineers for the Shine On! Challenge!
We are asking runners, triathloners, swimmers, cyclists, and mountaineers who are already participating in races or events to register with us for the Shine On! Challenge. All registered challengers will have the opportunity to raise money as an Individual or part of a Team (company, club, country, friends). Supporters, friends and family of registered challengers are encouraged to make an online pledge.
With your help, the Tyler Foundation is hoping to raise 3 million JPY this year! All proceeds from these exciting events will go towards the Tyler Foundation’s Shine On! Beads of Courage Program.
“Last year, during the marathon the weather was as bad as it could possibly be – just on the verge of snow – freezing cold – and I had my Bead of Courage. I was running the race and so miserable.” Susan thought about leaving the race and passing the Bead to (her husband) Tim, but knew the Bead had to finish the whole race. “But I literally thought then the Bead won’t finish the race. If not for the Bead, I wouldn’t have finished the race.” That’s what it’s all about. “Just kids. Helping kids. And families of kids. It’s got to be really hard on the families to have their kids going through such difficulty. Everyone with kids can relate – but then everyone can relate because they were kids once themselves.”
-Susan Griffen, one of Tyler Foundation’s very loyal supporters and multi-Shine On! Marathon runner
“Connecting caring individuals with courageous kids through a random act of kindness”
Athletes who raise 10,000 yen or more in pledges have the opportunity to participate in a very special program called Team Beads of Courage to directly touch the life of a child with cancer in Japan. The Tyler Foundation is the sole representative of the US-founded Beads of Courage® program in Japan. Children fighting cancer receive colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage to commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path. Each bead tells a story of strength, honor and hope. Through Team Beads of Courage, you will receive two handmade beads. You carry or wear both of them during your challenge, and when you finish, one bead will go to a child with cancer in Japan when her or she is going through a particularly challenging time. People who have joined Team BOC say the knowledge they are carrying a bead that will go to a child inspires them even more during their challenge!
The Shine On! Beads of Courage program helps children to record, tell, and own their stories of courage during their cancer treatment. Upon enrollment, each child is given a length of string and letter beads that spell out their first name. Then, colorful beads, each representing a different treatment, milestone, or courageous act, are given by their health care provider. Of course children enjoy collecting beads, but they are also acutely aware of the deeper meaning the beads hold their own story of strength, honor and hope. Most children collect an average of 800 beads during treatment for cancer! Ultimately, this program helps children cope better with their treatment, reduce stress and restore their sense of self, but perhaps most important is that the children say the beads make them happy! Launched in October 2009 at Ibaraki Children’s Hospital this program is now in 13 hospitals from Hokkaido to Kyushu and with your help – we aim to have the funds to launch at 3 more by the time the Shine On! Challenge is finished!
