We are employees of the Lufthansa Group and members of Help Alliance Japan, a charity initiative within the Lufthansa Group. This year, we are taking on the challenge of the Berlin Marathon to raise awareness and support for Shine On! Kids (SOK), a certified NPO dedicated to supporting children with serious illnesses and their families.
SOK brings warmth and comfort to children undergoing long-term medical treatment through its Hospital Facility Dog Program, which places full-time, specially trained dogs and their handlers in hospitals to support young patients and their families.
Through this run, we aim to raise funds that will help shine a light of hope on the children and families facing these difficult journeys.

I started running after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Witnessing the unimaginable destruction so close to home left me feeling deeply powerless. During that time, a friend introduced me to the idea of fundraising through running—and that became the start of my journey.
I began to run with the hope that, even in a small way, I could make a difference for those affected—especially for the children and their futures.
It was then that I came across the work of Shine On! Kids (SOK), an NPO that supports children with cancer and other serious illnesses. These children often face prolonged hospital stays and exhausting treatments—challenges that would be hard even for adults.
One of SOK’s key programs is the Hospital Facility Dog Program, where specially trained dogs work full-time in hospitals as part of medical teams. Alongside their handlers—certified nurses with years of clinical experience—these dogs provide both physical and emotional comfort to children and their families. They lie beside children who are feeling unwell, stay close when they have no appetite, and accompany them to rehabilitation sessions and before and after surgeries. Their presence also brings calm and reassurance to family members during difficult times.
SOK trains these dogs according to international standards and currently operates in four hospitals across Japan: Shizuoka Children’s Hospital, Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center, Tokyo Metropolitan Children’s Medical Center, and the National Center for Child Health and Development.
Many other hospitals in Japan hope to implement the program, but each team requires at least ¥8 million for training a Hospital Facility Dog.
To support this incredible initiative and bring comfort to children facing serious illness, my colleague and I decided to run the Berlin Marathon and raise funds.
Honestly, this will be my first full marathon in 10 years—and I’m not sure I’ll make it to the finish line easily. But I’ll give it everything I have.

ルフトハンザグループのチャリティー組織、ヘルプアライアンスジャパンの一員として、私たちは心を込めて今年のベルリンマラソンを走ります。
この挑戦を通じて、子どもたちの笑顔と未来のために、特定非営利活動法人シャイン・オン・キッズの活動を応援したいと考えています。
彼らはホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®とハンドラー（ペアを組む研修を受けた臨床経験のある看護師）を病院に派遣し、重い病気と闘う子どもたちとそのご家族に温かい寄り添いを届けています。
長期の闘病生活の中で、何度も心折れそうになる子どもたちやその家族、少しでも癒しと希望の光を届けたい。その思いから、シャイン・オン！キッズへのファンドレイジングを募ります。

私がランニングを始めたきっかけは、東日本大震災でした。
今までに目にしたことがない悲惨な被害が、身近に起こっていて、どうすることもできない自分に無力感を感じている時、友人を通してファンドレイジングを知りました。
被災した方々、特に未来を大きく羽ばたく子供達のために少しでもサポートができないかとファンドレイジングを始めたのが、私のランニングの原点です。
そんな中、シャイン・オン！キッズを知りました。
シャイン・オン！キッズは、小児がんや重い病気の子供達をサポートするNPOです。
大人でも辛い治療に立ち向かい、長期入院を強いられている子供達に少しでも寄り添えるサポートをしています。
シャイン・オン！キッズの活動の一つに、ホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®︎プログラムがあります。ホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®︎は、小児がんや重い病気の子どもたちが治療を前向きにとらえ、自尊心を保てるよう、子どもたちとその家族に寄り添うために医療チームの一員として専門的に育成された犬です。
ホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®︎は、ハンドラーという臨床経験がある医療従事者と一緒に病院に常勤しています。子供達が、体調が優れない時に添い寝をしたり、食事が食べれない時に寄り添ったり、リハビリや手術前後に付き添ったり、その家族と一緒に過ごしたり等、少しでも励ましになるように活動をしています。
ホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®︎の育成は、シャイン・オン！キッズが国際基準に準じたトレーニングやフォローアップを採用し、現在日本で静岡県立こども病院、神奈川県立こども医療センター、東京都立小児総合医療センターと国立成育医療研究センターで採用されています。
ホスピタル・ファシリティドッグ®︎を採用したいと望んでいる病院が日本に数か所あり、そのための育成に一頭あたり800万円の費用がかかります。
この活動のために、同僚と私はベルリンマラソンに挑戦し、重い病気の子供達が少しでも癒されるように、ファンドレイジングを立ち上げました。
10年間のブランクを得て再度挑戦するフルマラソンのため、正直完走ができるか不安ですが、最後まで諦めず完走を目指します。
