Hi Everyone,
I am Tariq, a high school sophomore at the American School in Japan. I want to take this opportunity to invite you to join me in supporting kids the Shine On! Kids, Beads of Courage®︎ program which supports children in Japan fighting serious illness.
This program provides children in the hospital with colorful beads symbolizing key treatment milestones with each type of bead representing their specific treatment (chemotherapy, hair loss due to treatment, blood testing, surgery). A ¥15,000 donation to the Beads of Courage®︎ program will support the purchase of approximately 900 beads, covering a single child’s full year treatment program.
I am trying to raise ¥1,500,000 for 100 kids across 24 hospitals. 100% of the money raised will support the purchase and provision of Beads of Courage to these brave children. You and your friends can help you donate even by splitting the ¥15,000 5 ways to only ¥3,000 per person. Any donation supporting these children is appreciated!
As part of my journey to raise awareness and donations for the Beads of Courage®︎ program, in July, I will swim across the Tsugaru Strait, 30 km (Honshu to Hokkaido) as part of the Oceans 7 Open Water Swim event.
For me, the connection to the children fighting serious illness is highly personal as me and my twin sister, Nadia, were born premature (only 2.9 – 3.1 lbs.) and spent our first weeks in the N-ICU fighting to grow strong enough to finally go home. I may not have memories but I know from my parents that many people came together to support my sister and I on our journey from the hospital to our home.
In trying to understand how I could help raise awareness of the beads program to help children, I decided to challenge myself and swim the Tsugaru Strait. However, I was only 12 years old and my parents wouldn’t give me permission. Now, I am an experienced marathon swimmer (10km events) and ready for the challenge.
My Shine On! Kids experience began years ago, when my twin sister Nadia and I joined several events including Shine On! Kids Monopoly events where we played Monopoly with survivors and Monopoly World Champions. My father also supported Shine On! Kids by raising money and participating in the Shine On! charity Executive Fight Night boxing event.
I want to thank you for helping me raise awareness of Shine On! Kids and Beads of Courage®︎ programs and supporting as many children as possible in the Beads program.

皆さん、こんにちは！
僕の名前はタリクです。アメリカンスクールインジャパンの高校生で16才です。小児がんや重い病気と闘う日本の子供たちのために、ビーズ・オブ・カレッジ（勇気のビーズ＝Beads of Courage®︎）プログラムへのご支援をお願いします！
このプログラムに参加している病院の子供たちは、いろいろな治療を乗り越えた時に、それぞれの治療を象徴するカラフルなビーズを手渡されます。ビーズには、化学療法、髪の毛が抜け始めた時、血液検査、手術などそれぞれに意味があります。
15,000円でひとりの子供の１年分のビーズ、約900個が用意できます。
今回僕は、２５の病院で行われているこのプログラムの100人分のビーズのために、150万円を集めようとしています。
集められた寄付金は全てビーズ・オブ・カレッジ（勇気のビーズ）の購入とサポートのために使われます。
そして、このプログラムのための資金を集めるため、僕は今年7月、オーシャンズセブン（世界七大海峡）と呼ばれる海峡のひとつの津軽海峡を青森県から北海道まで、約30kmを泳ぎます。
僕にとって、重い病気と闘う子供たちとのつながりは身近で大切なものです。僕と双子の姉ナディアは未熟児で生まれ、僕は1300g、ナディアは1400gしかありませんでした。最初の数週間、僕たちはNICUで十分に強くなるために闘いました。病院ではたくさんの人たちのサポートを受け、退院することができたと両親から聞きました。
プログラムをもっとたくさんの人に知ってもらいたい、そのPRのために津軽海峡縦断泳に挑戦したいと考えました。最初にこのイベントを知ったのは12歳の時でしたが、その時はまだ体も小さく両親は参加を許可してくれませんでした。
でも今は身長182cm、10kmのオープンウォーターイベントにも参加できるようになりました。
チャレンジの準備はできています！
僕とナディアは小学生の頃から、このプログラムを主催するNPO団体、Shine On! Kidsへの寄付やイベントに参加してきました。サバイバーの子供たちと一緒に、モノポリー世界チャンピオンとモノポリーゲームをしたこともあります。
僕の父DanもShine On! Kidsを応援していて、チャリティーボクシングイベントではリングで戦い、資金を集めました。
僕は自分の家族だけでなく、もっとたくさんの人たちにこの活動を知ってもらい、サポートの輪を広げていきたいのです。
