Therapy Dog and infection

2012/02/14 11:35 Facility Dog

Bailey with Certified nurse Hamada

From our Facility Dog Handler Yuko Morita.

Japan Society of Environmental Infection Conference was held in Fukuoka, Japan on February 3-4. Certified nurse Hamada, a specialist in hospital‐acquired infection, presented their research looking into Shine On! Therapy Dog Bailey’s activity in the hospitals and any resulting risks for patient infection.

Hamada’s research concluded that Bailey poses no major risk for infection to patients. Further, my background as a qualified nurse is useful in further educating hospitals, families and patients about infection prevention and about the low risk Bailey poses.

Risk of infection is the biggest concern hosiptals have when looking to implement our Shine On! Therapy Dog Program, so I hope that this research eases their concerns and assists in the development of the program.
